Arizona Wildcats softball adds two top in‑state recruits for 2028 class

Arizona’s softball program continued its push for local talent on Sunday, confirming the commitments of two highly regarded prospects from the Phoenix metro area. Right‑handed pitcher and first baseman Annika Ridling and left‑handed‑throwing, right‑handed‑hitting catcher Jaiden Stell will join the Wildcats in Tucson as part of the 2028 recruiting class.

Stell’s standout credentials

Stell, a four‑star recruit according to both Rivals and Softball America, is ranked as the 90th‑best player among the 150 prospects listed for the class. Rivals places her as the second‑best player in Arizona and the No. 8 corner infielder statewide, while Softball America lists her as a catcher. The outlet’s scouting report highlights her unique skill set: “Stell is a unique left‑handed‑throwing, right‑handed‑hitting catcher. She frames pitches well low in the zone and has a strong, powerful lower half. Offensively, she works the timing of her swing well and has shown the ability to drive the ball with power to all fields, especially when she gets extended.”

Stell played her high‑school ball for Verrado in Buckeye, where she posted a .570 batting average with 15 doubles, four triples and seven home runs, earning 5A All‑Conference first‑team honors as a freshman in the 2024‑25 season. Her highlights are available on her SportsRecruits profile.

Ridling’s pitching prowess

Ridling, a right‑handed pitcher and first baseman from Desert Vista in Phoenix, also competes in track and volleyball. She finished fourth in the 6A classification with a 1.70 ERA and limited opponents to a .194 batting average last season. Over 21 appearances (seven starts), she posted a 7‑2 record and earned 6A Central Region second‑team honors. Softball America’s Brady Vernon praised her development, noting that she “locates well” and has shown strong growth.

Ridling’s highlights can be viewed on her SportsRecruits profile.

Additional Arizona prospects

In addition to Ridling and Stell, the Wildcats have received visits from two more travel teammates: four‑star outfielder Grace Tonga and middle infielder Lulu Johnston, both members of the Illinois Chill Gold travel organization that previously produced former Wildcat Emma Kavanagh.

What this means for Arizona softball

By securing two top in‑state players who have already demonstrated elite performance at the high‑school level, Arizona reinforces its commitment to building a competitive program rooted in local talent. The Wildcats’ recruiting strategy aligns with the university’s broader goal of fostering strong family and community ties, offering home‑grown athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest collegiate level while staying close to their families.

Fans can look forward to seeing Ridling and Stell develop under the guidance of head coach Caitlin Lowe‑Nagy as the Wildcats aim to contend for conference titles and national championships in the coming years.
