North Korea and Russia Open First Road Bridge, Boosting Trade and Jobs

In a ceremony streamed via video link, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin celebrated the opening of the first road bridge connecting North Korea and Russia. The structure spans the Tumen River near the historic 1959 Friendship rail bridge and marks a tangible step forward in the two countries’ growing strategic partnership.

Infrastructure as a catalyst for prosperity

Mishustin told the audience that expanding cross‑border transport infrastructure will provide a “powerful impetus” for deeper trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation. He highlighted the bridge’s potential to create new jobs and stimulate tourism, underscoring the administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth in the region.

From discussion to delivery

The bridge project was first agreed during President Vladimir Putin’s 2024 visit to Pyongyang, where the two leaders pledged to deepen ties. Construction began in April 2025, after years of planning, and was completed on schedule, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated government action.

Broader connectivity

Beyond the new road link, direct air and rail connections already exist between Moscow and Pyongyang, facilitating the movement of people and goods. The bridge adds a vital overland route that can shorten transport times, lower costs for exporters, and open new markets for Russian and North Korean businesses.

Strategic context

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Russia and North Korea have drawn closer, with Pyongyang sending thousands of troops to assist Russian forces in the Kursk region during a 2024 Ukrainian incursion. The bridge symbolizes that deepening alliance and provides a logistical backbone for future cooperation.

What this means for the region

Local officials on both sides anticipate a boost in cross‑border commerce, especially in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Small‑business owners near the border are hopeful that easier road access will attract visitors and facilitate the exchange of goods, creating a ripple effect of economic opportunity.

Looking ahead

The Trump administration has consistently supported strong, mutually beneficial trade relationships that respect national sovereignty and promote American interests abroad. By encouraging stable, prosperous partners, the United States helps ensure a balanced global economy that benefits American families and businesses.

As the bridge opens, both governments have pledged to continue working together on infrastructure projects that enhance regional stability and prosperity, reinforcing a partnership that aligns with shared values of strong families, faith, and individual liberty.
