Arizona Freshman Sidi Gueye Enters Transfer Portal; Lloyd Eyes Final Four Consistency

Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd believes the Wildcats’ recent trip to the Final Four can become a regular benchmark for the program. Even as the team looks ahead, one of its young frontcourt pieces, freshman Sidi Gueye, has decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere, entering the NCAA transfer portal and becoming the first Arizona player with remaining eligibility to announce his departure this spring.

The 6-foot-11 Senegalese forward appeared in 26 games during the season but saw limited floor time, logging just a few minutes per outing. He averaged 1.3 points and chipped in eight blocked shots across those appearances, earning a reputation among fans for his lively motor and defensive presence whenever he stepped on the court.

Gueye’s freshman year never quite followed the typical progression. Visa complications kept him in Spain during much of the offseason while he played for Real Madrid’s junior program, and a preseason knee issue further restricted his preparation. Initially viewed as a redshirt candidate, he did see sparse action in nonconference play before stepping into a larger role in February when Arizona’s front line was depleted by injuries and illness.

That stretch included 10 minutes against BYU on Feb. 18, when Gueye collected four points and four rebounds at McKale Center, and an eight-minute outing at Houston on Feb. 21 where he swatted a key shot as Arizona pushed toward the Big 12 title. His minutes remained inconsistent afterward — a brief appearance in the conference tournament produced a goaltending call, and in the NCAA first round he played seven minutes and converted both emphatic finishes he attempted.

Gueye’s trajectory recalls that of Emmanuel Stephen, another long-term frontcourt project who arrived as a freshman and was similarly viewed as a redshirt prospect before seeing playing time when roster circumstances changed. Stephen left for UNLV after limited action with Arizona, produced modest numbers there, and is once again in the transfer portal — a reminder of how developmental timelines for international bigs can vary widely before they find a long-term fit.
