Residents of Arizona should prepare for a potentially wetter summer as meteorologists from the National Weather Service (NWS) predict a higher likelihood of above-normal rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season. The monsoon period, which spans from June 15 to September 30, could bring increased precipitation to various parts of the state.
According to the NWS Monsoon Outlook report, there is a 33-50% chance that Arizona will experience above-normal rainfall this summer. Specifically, the Phoenix and Tucson areas have a 37% probability of seeing more rain than usual. Other cities such as Flagstaff, Prescott, Show Low, Globe, Douglas, and Nogales are also expected to lean towards the ‘above normal’ range of precipitation.
One of the key factors contributing to this forecast is the anticipated emergence of El Nino events in the Pacific Ocean. These climatic events can significantly influence weather patterns, leading to increased rainfall in certain regions.
Despite these predictions, the NWS notes that there remains a possibility for normal or even below-normal precipitation levels in some areas. On average, Phoenix receives about 2.43 inches of rain during the monsoon season.
