Fayetteville Councilmember Scott Berna Will Not Seek Re-election

In a significant development for Fayetteville’s local governance, City Councilmember Scott Berna has announced that he will not be seeking re-election this year. Representing Ward 3, which includes key areas such as the Northwest Arkansas Mall and Lake Fayetteville, Berna has been a notable figure in the city’s council since his election.

Berna’s decision, shared on May 26, was made after much thought, prayer, and family discussions. While he did not explicitly link his decision to recent political events, it follows a contentious vote where he supported maintaining zoning for Swarm Aero, a drone manufacturer, which led to some backlash from constituents.

Despite the challenges, Berna reflected positively on his tenure, stating, “The last three and a half years have been both challenging and rewarding. I will leave this seat focusing on the rewarding times.” He emphasized his commitment to listening and respecting the views of all citizens, hoping that the residents of Ward 3 feel well-represented.

New Candidates Emerge

With Berna stepping down, the race for his seat is heating up. Hayley Hall, a candidate for Ward 3, expressed her appreciation for Berna’s service and her eagerness to engage in discussions about Fayetteville’s future. Another candidate, Andrew Brink, announced his candidacy shortly after Berna’s announcement.

Berna’s term will conclude on December 31, 2026, alongside other councilmembers such as Teresa Turk, Sarah Moore, and Bob Stafford. Notably, Stafford has also decided not to seek re-election, endorsing Coleman Warren as his preferred successor.

The filing period for municipal candidates is set to begin on July 29 and will close on August 5, with early voting starting on October 19 and Election Day scheduled for November 3.
