The Connecticut Board of Regents has appointed Natalie Braswell as the interim chancellor for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system. This decision comes after the sudden resignation of former interim Chancellor O. John Maduko, who stepped down in April amid a sexual harassment investigation.
Leadership Transition
Natalie Braswell, who has a distinguished career in public service, currently serves as General Counsel to Governor Ned Lamont. She previously held the position of State Comptroller, stepping in after the resignation of Kevin Lembo due to health issues. Braswell’s extensive experience also includes her role as Chief of Planning, Legal, and Regulatory Affairs at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
Governor Lamont expressed his confidence in Braswell’s ability to lead the CSCU during this transitional period, highlighting her steady leadership and sound judgment. He emphasized that Braswell is well-suited to help the institution focus on its primary mission of delivering educational opportunities and success for students.
Board’s Confidence
Air Santiago, the interim chair of the Board of Regents, echoed the governor’s sentiments. Santiago, who recently assumed his role following the resignation of former chair Marty Guay, stated that the board is confident in Braswell’s leadership capabilities. He praised her pragmatic and action-oriented approach, noting her reputation for handling complex challenges effectively.
The board plans to conduct a national search for a permanent chancellor in the fall. In the meantime, Braswell will serve in the interim role for a year, providing stability and continuity for the CSCU system.
