Appleton police responded to reports of a suspicious person near the 900 block of N. Bennett Street and the 800 block of W. Winnebago Street just before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers found three teenagers, ages 13 to 15, standing at the intersection of Locust Street and Winnebago Street.
Reviewing security footage supplied by a nearby homeowner, investigators saw a male walking through the homeowner’s driveway. The clothing and backpack worn by the individual matched one of the juveniles officers had spoken with.
Further questioning revealed that the identified teen had been entering unlocked vehicles and removing cash. The youth could not recall how many cars were involved or the exact locations of those vehicles.
Juvenile intake and police reminder
The teen was referred to the city’s Juvenile Intake Center on charges of theft. The other two juveniles were released to their parents or guardians after officers determined they were not involved in the thefts.
Appleton police used the incident to remind residents that simple precautions can reduce vehicle break‑ins. Officers urged motorists to lock their doors and remove valuables, even when parked at home or for a short period of time. By limiting easy access, the community can help prevent similar thefts and protect families from unnecessary loss.
Community response
Local parents expressed concern that unlocked cars remain an easy target for opportunistic theft. While the investigation is ongoing, the police department emphasized that they will continue to monitor the area and follow up on any additional leads.
The Appleton Police Department encourages anyone who sees suspicious activity or has information about the incident to contact the department’s non‑emergency line. Community cooperation remains a key element in keeping neighborhoods safe.
