Fallingwater Is Just the Beginning: Why Kentuck Knob Deserves Your Full Afternoon

Most visitors to the Laurel Highlands make a beeline for Fallingwater and call it a day. I understand the impulse — Frank Lloyd Wright’s cantilevered masterpiece is a genuine wonder of the world. But if you drive past Kentuck Knob on your way home without stopping, you have made a serious mistake, and I say that with complete affection.

Tucked into a wooded ridgeline off Route 381 in Chalk Hill, just a short drive southwest of Uniontown, Kentuck Knob sits at roughly 2,050 feet of elevation and commands a view of Hesselbein Hill that is, frankly, unfair in the best possible way. The house itself — a Usonian gem Wright designed in 1953 for the Hagan family — is smaller and more intimate than Fallingwater, which is precisely what makes it so revelatory. This is not architecture as spectacle. It is architecture as a way of living, and spending an hour inside it with a knowledgeable guide will permanently change how you think about light, space, and the relationship between a building and its landscape.

The hexagonal floor plan follows Wright’s Usonian principles: red-tinted concrete floors, tidewater cypress walls, and ceilings that hover low and then open dramatically toward terraces and sky. Every room orients you toward the outdoors. Every window frames something intentional. There is no wasted gesture anywhere in the structure, and standing in the kitchen — yes, the kitchen, which Wright considered the heart of domestic life — you feel it.

What sets Kentuck Knob apart from a typical house museum is the sculpture trail that winds through the surrounding 80 acres of woodland. The current owners, Lord and Lady Palumbo, have installed a remarkable collection of large-scale works by artists including Andy Goldsworthy, whose dry-stone wall snaking through the trees is worth the admission price on its own. You can walk the grounds freely after your guided tour, and most people end up spending far longer than they planned, camera out, discovering something new around every bend in the path.

Tours run most days of the year, and the schedule is posted clearly on the Kentuck Knob website — I’d recommend booking ahead, especially on fall weekends when the foliage turns the hillside into something almost embarrassingly beautiful. The gift shop carries thoughtful books on Wright and design, and the staff genuinely loves this place, which always makes a difference.

Uniontown is your natural base camp for a day like this. Spend your morning in town, grab lunch, and head out to Chalk Hill in the early afternoon when the light softens and the forest takes on that particular golden quality unique to southwestern Pennsylvania in any season worth traveling for. Come for the architecture. Stay for the sculpture. Leave planning your return.
