Ansonia Initiates Investigation into Alleged Misuse of City Funds

The City of Ansonia has taken a decisive step to ensure fiscal responsibility by hiring an external law firm to investigate allegations of misuse of city credit cards and resources. This decision was made by the Board of Alders on Wednesday night, authorizing the Crumbie Law Firm to conduct a thorough investigation into these claims.

Investigation Details

The allegations include potential misuse of city-issued credit cards, vehicles, fuel purchases, and other city resources. Upon assuming office in December, Mayor Frank Tyszka (D) discovered a lack of clarity regarding who held city credit cards and noted the absence of established spending policies at City Hall. In response to these irregularities, Tyszka requested the Board of Alders to approve the hiring of an independent firm to investigate the matter.

Mayor Tyszka expressed his concerns, stating, “God forbid this is really a disaster. I hope it’s not. But I hope we get the truth. That’s all I’m looking for.” While he did not specify the amount of money potentially misused, he indicated that the situation warranted a formal investigation. Despite the decision, two alders opposed the investigation, citing the need for a clearer understanding of the financial implications involved.

Legal and Political Reactions

Caroline Baird, representing Ansonia Corporation Counsel, emphasized the importance of gathering all facts before making any allegations. No current or former city employees have been accused of mishandling funds at this stage. However, former mayor David Cassetti’s attorney, Rob Serefinowicz, dismissed the investigation as a “political witch hunt,” expressing skepticism about its validity and potential outcomes.

Mayor Tyszka has assured that the investigation is not driven by personal motives, stating, “I have no personal vendetta to do anything, but if money was taken or something was stolen, I have an ethical, moral obligation, fiduciary responsibility to the city to find out.” The financial aspects of the investigation, including the retainer and costs, will be discussed with the law firm, with assurances that these expenses will not burden taxpayers.

In pursuit of transparency, NBC Connecticut has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for city spending records, aiming to shed light on the financial management practices of the previous administration.
