Anchorage to Hold Public Meetings on $1.4 Billion Safer Seward Highway Project

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is moving forward with a major safety upgrade to the Seward Highway, a vital corridor that runs through Anchorage. The $1.4 billion “Safer Seward Highway” project will widen the road between Bird Flats and Rabbit Creek, add a median, create additional turn and acceleration lanes, and construct a separate multi‑use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Why the project matters

Designated a Safety Corridor in 2006, this stretch of the highway has historically seen a higher rate of fatal and major‑injury crashes than comparable routes in Alaska. DOT&PF’s fact sheet outlines several safety improvements, including curve flattening, rock‑ and ice‑fall mitigation, wider shoulders, a divided highway, better line of sight, and added turning and merge lanes.

Meeting details for Anchorage residents

DOT&PF will present the project plan at an in‑person meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The gathering will be held in the Learning Commons of the Loussac Library, 3600 Denali Street, Anchorage. A brief presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a public Q&A session. Light refreshments will be provided.

For those unable to attend in person, a virtual meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The same presentation and comment period will be available online.

How to comment

The public comment period runs from September 22 through October 22, 2026. Residents can submit written comments through the project website at safersewardhighway.com. The agency encourages input from Anchorage families, commuters, and community groups who rely on the highway for daily travel.

Funding and timeline

The project is expected to be built in stages, each roughly $150 million, over a 10‑ to 20‑year horizon. Funding will come primarily from the National Highway Performance Program and other federal grant sources.

By addressing long‑standing safety concerns and providing a dedicated path for non‑motorized travel, the Safer Seward Highway project aims to protect Anchorage’s families while supporting the region’s economic vitality.
