The National Portrait Gallery’s Neighbor Has Been Hiding the Best Jazz Brunch in Washington

Friday evenings in Washington have a particular kind of magic, and if you have never spent one on the grass at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden with a plastic cup of wine in your hand and a live jazz quartet swinging twenty feet away, then you have been missing out on one of this city’s most genuinely pleasurable warm-weather traditions. Jazz in the Garden has been running since 1997, which means it is old enough to have become a true institution — and yet somehow it still feels like a discovery every time you show up.

The Sculpture Garden sits right on the National Mall between Seventh and Ninth Streets NW, flanked by the West Building of the National Gallery on one side and the Hirshhorn on the other. The garden itself is a beautifully designed open-air space: a circular fountain at its center, mature trees providing shade at the edges, and Ellsworth Kelly, Louise Bourgeois, and Roy Lichtenstein sculptures presiding over everything with a kind of serene authority. In winter the fountain becomes a skating rink. In summer it becomes the backdrop for one of the best free concerts in America.

The series runs on Friday evenings from late spring through early fall, typically from five-thirty to eight-thirty in the evening. The music is consistently excellent — the National Gallery books everything from straight-ahead jazz to Latin jazz, swing, and blues. The performers are real working musicians, not background acts, and the crowd knows it. People actually listen, which is refreshing. But the atmosphere is relaxed enough that you can spread a blanket, kick off your shoes, and let the evening go wherever it wants to take you.

The Pavilion Café, located inside the garden, stays open during Jazz in the Garden evenings and does a brisk business in wine, beer, and light food. Grab a bottle of something cold and settle in. If you are visiting with out-of-town guests who want to feel the pulse of Washington without another solemn monument, this is your answer. There is something revealing about watching congressional staffers, tourists from Ohio, art students, and retirees all occupying the same patch of grass, all visibly unwinding in the same key.

Admission to Jazz in the Garden is completely free. You do not need a ticket, you do not need a reservation, and you do not need a plan beyond showing up sometime before the music starts and finding a good spot near the fountain. The National Mall’s Metro stops — Archives-Navy Memorial and Smithsonian — are both a short walk away, so leave the car at the hotel.

Washington is full of experiences that require advance planning, membership cards, and dress codes. Jazz in the Garden requires none of those things. It just requires you to be there on a Friday evening when the light is golden and the music is good, which, in this city, turns out to be more than enough.
