A tragic incident unfolded in northwest Albuquerque late Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a man and minor injuries to two police officers. The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) responded to a call concerning a man reportedly experiencing suicidal thoughts near Eighth Street and Bellamah Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers heard yelling from the residence and successfully negotiated the safe exit of family members. However, the man remained inside the home. According to Police Chief Cecily Barker, the man eventually came outside to engage with officers. Despite the use of less-lethal force, the man retreated back into the house.
Shortly afterward, a shot was fired from within the residence, striking an officer’s vehicle and causing injuries to two officers from shattered glass. Medical personnel treated the officers for their minor injuries.
The situation escalated when the man exited the home again, this time armed with a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the police. A drone was used to confirm that the man had returned inside the house and was found with blood around him. Officers entered the residence and pronounced him deceased at the scene.
APD has initiated a felony investigation related to the case, and further details will be released as they become available. This incident underscores the complexities and dangers involved in responding to mental health crises, highlighting the need for effective intervention strategies.
