Edgewater Honors Lori Cannon with Street Renaming for Her Community Service

In a heartfelt tribute to a dedicated community servant, the 5500 block of North Broadway in Edgewater has been renamed Lori Cannon Way. This honor commemorates Lori Cannon, a prominent figure in the local community known for her tireless work supporting individuals affected by AIDS through her food pantry, GroceryLand.

A Legacy of Service

Lori Cannon, who passed away in August at the age of 74, was celebrated by family, friends, and community members during the unveiling of the street sign. Her daughter, Angelique Munro, expressed her pride in her mother’s recognition, noting Cannon’s lifelong commitment to helping others. Cannon founded Open Hand in 1988, a meal delivery program that evolved into GroceryLand, a food pantry that continues to serve the Edgewater community under the Heartland Alliance Health umbrella.

Known for her vibrant personality and dedication, Cannon was described by many as an ‘AIDS angel’ for her advocacy during a time when government support was lacking. Her efforts extended beyond food assistance; she was also a leader in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, contributing to the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and co-founding the local chapter of ACT UP.

Community Impact

GroceryLand remains a vital resource in the 48th Ward, providing meals to those in need. Alderman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth acknowledged Cannon’s transformative impact on the community, emphasizing the ongoing importance of her work. The street renaming coincided with what would have been Cannon’s 75th birthday, a fitting tribute to her enduring legacy.

In addition to her work with GroceryLand, Cannon co-founded the Legacy Project, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving LGBTQ+ history and culture. Her contributions to this initiative include the installation of bronze plaques along Halsted Street, highlighting the achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide.

Victor Salvo, a co-founder of the Legacy Project and a lifelong friend of Cannon, praised her selflessness and dedication to volunteerism. As GroceryLand approaches the milestone of serving its 20 millionth meal, Salvo honored Cannon as the driving force behind its success.
