Albuquerque community gathers for Out of the Darkness suicide‑prevention walk

On Saturday, Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque became a place of hope and remembrance as the city’s annual Out of the Darkness Walk brought together families, friends, and community leaders. The event, held during National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, offered participants a chance to honor loved ones lost to suicide, share personal stories, and raise awareness about the importance of mental‑health resources.

Why the walk matters

The New Mexico Department of Health reports that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death across all ages in the state. While the department noted a 19% decline in the overall suicide rate between 2024 and 2025, the issue remains acute for youth, ranking as the second leading cause of death for New Mexico residents ages 12 to 17. Organizers emphasized that the walk is not a one‑time event but a call for year‑round advocacy and support.

Personal stories of loss and hope

Among the walkers was Yolanda Cuarenta, who lost her brother unexpectedly. “My brother was so happy and an outgoing person. It never once ever crossed our mind that that was something that was going to happen,” Cuarenta said. “Just know that you’re not alone, you’re loved, you’re important, and you leave behind so many people that just need you here.”

A mother walking in memory of her daughter described her as “a loving daughter, a great sister,” adding, “She was my best friend.” A father, a coach with his cheer team, and many other participants echoed similar sentiments, underscoring that mental‑health challenges affect people of every age, race, and background.

Community leaders weigh in

Alix Herrera, board chair for the New Mexico Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, explained the walk’s purpose: “This event is called ‘Out of the Darkness,’ and it’s really to bring people out into the light and show that they’re not alone when a loss has happened.” Herrera stressed that the walk’s custom stick‑on signs, which allow participants to name and honor their loved ones, help transform grief into a visible statement of solidarity.

Looking ahead

Event organizers and attendees agreed that the fight against suicide requires continuous effort. “Mental health is everywhere. It doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter what age, race you are, it’s always going to be there,” said a coach walking with her cheer team. The walk served as a reminder that, even after an unimaginable loss, no one has to face the darkness alone.

Local mental‑health providers and faith‑based groups have pledged to expand counseling services and outreach programs throughout the coming year, aiming to build on the recent decline in suicide rates and to address the persistent risk among young people. The community’s collective presence at the walk signals a growing commitment to these efforts.

For those seeking help, the New Mexico Department of Health offers a 24‑hour crisis line (1‑800‑273‑8255) and a range of resources available through local clinics, schools, and churches. The Out of the Darkness Walk reminds Albuquerquenos that support is always within reach.
