Albuquerque is stepping up wildfire prevention in the Bosque with more patrols, expanded fuel reduction work, and new technology designed to spot fires. With fire danger expected to remain elevated through the summer, the city’s approach combines boots on the ground with technology aimed at detecting fires faster and reducing the chance they grow out of control.
Enhanced Wildfire Strategy
The city’s enhanced wildfire strategy includes more patrols around Bosque trails and open space during periods of elevated fire danger, additional fuel reduction projects to remove vegetation that can feed wildfires, and expanded use of fire detection sensors capable of identifying heat, smoke, and flames. City leaders said the technology has already proven effective by alerting responders to some fires before anyone called 911.
Police are also increasing enforcement during the holiday weekend. Officers will patrol on foot, bicycles, ATVs, drones, and boats to discourage activities that can spark fires, such as illegal fireworks, open flames, and smoking. Residents are urged to obey fire restrictions, properly dispose of cigarettes, avoid prohibited fireworks in open spaces, and immediately report smoke or suspicious activity.
