As thousands of New Mexicans head outdoors for the Fourth of July weekend, the New Mexico Department of Wildlife is encouraging visitors to put safety first on the water or while exploring trails.
Boating Safety Reminders
Boaters are reminded to inspect their watercraft before launching to help prevent the spread of species. This includes cleaning boats and trailers of plants and debris, draining all water from boats, livewells, and motors, and drying equipment completely before visiting another lake or river.
The department also reminds boaters that inspection stations will be operating at many popular waterways.
Safety Reminders for OHV Riders
With increased trail traffic expected over the holiday weekend, conservation officers are urging riders to slow down and follow state regulations. Key reminders include completing a safety course and wearing approved helmets for riders under 18, never operating an OHV under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and staying off paved roads unless permitted and avoiding reckless riding.
Following these guidelines can help ensure a safe holiday while protecting New Mexico’s natural resources.
