Aisha Wahab Wins California’s 14th District Special Election

California state Senator Aisha Wahab will represent the 14th Congressional District for the balance of Rep. Eric Swalwell’s term after winning Thursday’s special election. The district, which includes parts of Alameda County on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay, will have its new member in Congress through January, when the current term ends.

Local roots, national milestone

Wahab, a progressive Democrat, emphasized her personal journey from foster care to the Capitol, saying the victory proves the district “cannot be bought.” She also noted that her election makes her the first Afghan American to serve in the United States Congress.

Campaign dynamics

The race pitted Wahab against Bay Area Rapid Transit Director Melissa Hernandez, a moderate Democrat who received substantial outside spending. Groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) contributed millions to support Hernandez and to oppose Wahab in the final weeks of the campaign. Despite that financial pressure, Wahab prevailed, echoing her earlier primary win in June.

Policy focus

During her time in the California Legislature, Wahab championed housing affordability and access, issues that remain critical in the high‑cost Bay Area. She also authored a 2023 bill to ban caste‑based discrimination, a measure that drew national attention before Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed it, citing existing civil‑rights protections.

Future contests

Wahab and Hernandez are slated to face each other again in November for the full two‑year term. The upcoming election will determine who will serve the district beyond the remainder of Swalwell’s term.

Background on the vacancy

Rep. Eric Swalwell resigned in April after ending his gubernatorial bid and facing sexual‑assault allegations, which he denies. Federal agents recently seized electronic devices from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and later searched his Washington, D.C., home as part of the ongoing investigation.

Local significance

Wahab’s victory underscores the importance of local representation in a district that has long grappled with housing pressures, transportation challenges, and a diverse electorate. Her statement, “I will fight for this district that raised me,” reflects a commitment to the community’s everyday concerns while also marking a historic first for Afghan‑American representation at the federal level.
