AI tools now used by nearly one‑third of auto and home insurance shoppers, JD Power reports

Dallas‑area listeners of The Car Pro Show may have heard the latest insurance news: a JD Power study released this month reveals that almost one‑third of auto and home insurance customers—29 percent—are already using artificial intelligence tools to research policies, manage accounts, and even file claims.

Study details and methodology

The inaugural 2026 U.S. AI Insurance Experience Study surveyed 8,352 customers who had interacted with AI through their insurance carriers, third‑party chatbots, or insurance‑aggregation platforms. The data were collected from June through July 2026 and cover 24 insurance brands and eight third‑party AI tools.

How consumers are using AI

According to the study, respondents employ AI in several ways: researching coverage options, comparing quotes, understanding policy language before filing a claim, and handling routine account tasks. This mirrors the early adoption patterns seen with the internet and mobile apps, as noted by Tony Soloman, director of insurance intelligence at JD Power.

Insurers’ response

Soloman warned that insurers must ensure their own websites and mobile apps provide a comprehensive, user‑friendly experience. He also emphasized the need for carriers to monitor how third‑party AI systems ingest and interpret their data, protecting both brand integrity and consumer information.

Eric McCready, JD Power’s director of digital solutions, added that while insurer‑specific AI tools are still emerging, they are poised to become major investments in the coming years. He said, “Customers are actively using these tools and comparing results with widely available third‑party tools and making big decisions based on the results.”

Implications for the Texas market

For Texas consumers, the findings suggest that local insurers will need to accelerate AI development to stay competitive. As more drivers and homeowners rely on digital assistants for policy decisions, carriers that lag in AI capabilities risk losing market share.

Jerry Reynolds, host of The Car Pro Show and president of the Car Pro Radio Network, highlighted the relevance for Texas listeners, noting that AI can simplify the often‑complex process of selecting auto and home coverage—a boon for families seeking reliable protection for their vehicles and homes.

Looking ahead

The study concludes that AI will increasingly shape the insurance experience, making it essential for insurers to invest in robust, transparent AI solutions. As the technology matures, consumers can expect faster, more personalized service, while insurers gain deeper insights into customer needs.
