Commanders coach Dan Quinn reviews opening loss, injuries and upcoming Cowboys game

Washington – In the wake of the Washington Commanders’ narrow 24‑22 season‑opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Dan Quinn addressed the media on Thursday, emphasizing lessons learned and the health status of four injured players.

Defending the two‑point decision

Quinn stood by the decision to attempt a two‑point conversion in the final minute of the game. “I thought it was a good play, one that we had practiced,” he said. “With a well‑executed play, I think we had a good chance at the two‑point play, which was gonna lead to overtime. It’s an effective two‑point play.” He added that the outcome should not be the sole measure of the call, noting that execution was a key factor.

Missed opportunities and teaching moments

Reflecting on the loss, Quinn stressed the importance of using the experience as a teaching moment for the team. “I spoke with the team this afternoon, and part of the topic was missed chances and missed opportunities in this game, and knowing that we don’t get those back,” he explained. “You don’t get them back in September football or in February football. But you will see the opportunities again, what we learned from them, and it’s all connected.” He praised the players’ effort and mindset while acknowledging areas that need improvement.

Injury updates

The coach also provided an update on four players who sustained injuries during the contest. None of the four have been ruled out for Week 2 yet. Quinn said the team expects to have a clearer picture of their statuses when the players return to the practice field on Wednesday.

Looking ahead to Dallas

With the loss leaving the Commanders 0‑1, the next challenge is a road game against division rival the Dallas Cowboys, scheduled for Sunday at 4:25 p.m. Quinn expressed confidence that the team will apply the lessons from Philadelphia to improve performance in the upcoming matchup.

As the season unfolds, the Commanders aim to turn early setbacks into growth opportunities, focusing on disciplined execution, health management, and the resilience needed to compete in the NFC East.
