Semi Fire Closes State Route 49

A crash involving a semi hauling paint products caused a major fire, power outage, and road closure in Williams County, Ohio. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 3:55 p.m. Monday on State Route 49 north of Edon in Florence Township.

Investigators say a 2022 Freightliner semi driven by 41-year-old Curtis Smith of Pioneer was traveling south when it went off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole. The truck then returned to the roadway, but the trailer caught fire.

Authorities say Smith was able to stop the vehicle and disconnect the tractor from the burning trailer. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The semi was transporting paint products, and firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze.

The crash also knocked out power in the area after the utility pole was damaged. As of Tuesday, State Route 49 remained closed because of extensive fire damage and cleanup efforts.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Numerous agencies assisted at the scene, including local fire departments, EMS, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Toledo Edison, and the Williams County Sheriff’s Office.
