Deerfield Township is adding a state-of-the-art baby box at Fire Rescue Station 59 on Butler Warren Road. This will be the community’s third baby box, with two others located at Deerfield Fire Station 58 and Fire Rescue Station 57.
Safe Haven Law
Ohio’s Safe Haven Law allows parents in crisis to surrender newborns at places like fire stations and hospitals, no questions asked. The baby box provides privacy to the parents while allowing a medical professional to immediately retrieve the baby.
The box will trigger an alarm alerting firefighters, who can tend to the baby within seconds, provide immediate care, and contact children’s services. The mother has complete privacy, with no questions asked.
According to Deerfield Township Board Vice President Lelle Lutts Hedding, the baby box at Station 59 will be a vital resource for the community, providing another lifeline for mothers in crisis and a safe beginning for their newborns.
