World Cup Tourism in Mexico

Mexico City is gearing up for the World Cup, with the country’s capital expecting to generate roughly $3.7 billion in revenue from the event. Tourism alone is projected to bring in almost half that amount to Mexico City.

Businesses and Cartels

From stores selling soccer jerseys to digital billboards promoting the matches, it seems everyone is eager to cash in on the tournament. However, cartels and organized criminal networks are also expected to benefit, with extortion being one of their most profitable strategies.

Security analysts warn that World Cup tourists will mostly be spared, but the businesses they frequent are likely to be targeted. In resort towns like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, criminals have a history of extorting restaurants, night clubs, and hotels, taking a chunk of the revenue they generate from tourists.

Concerns and Scams

One of the biggest concerns is that scammers will try to rip off fans with the sale of counterfeit items and services, including tickets to the 13 matches Mexico will host. The Mexican government has issued several notices, warning the public to avoid unreliable third-party vendors and to only buy from official or accredited sources.

Some Mexicans are thrilled that the World Cup is returning to their country, but others say they’re still not seeing the benefits. Small businesses like kiosks and restaurants in El Zocalo, the main plaza in Mexico City, could be pushed to the side despite being in a prime location.
