Local soccer enthusiasts had the opportunity to witness the Czech Republic’s national team practice at the newly constructed Texas Health Mansfield Stadium. The event marked the first public viewing of the stadium, which will serve as the base camp for the team during the World Cup.
Chuck Kalat, along with his wife Janet and daughter Patricia, attended the practice, decked out in Czechia gear. The Kalats, who reside in Richardson, are members of American Sokol, a cultural and fitness club with roots in the Czech Republic. For them, this practice was a chance to engage with the World Cup excitement without the high costs of attending a match.
Andy Gray, a lifelong Mansfield resident and soccer fan, expressed his excitement about the proximity of the World Cup activities. Having attended multiple World Cups in the past, Gray appreciated the convenience of the new stadium, which will also be home to the North Texas Soccer Club, the reserve team for FC Dallas.
Community and Cultural Connections
The practice session drew hundreds of fans, many of whom wore jerseys from various soccer clubs and national teams. Czech Republic flags were prominently displayed, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the players far from home. Defender Jaroslav Zelený noted the weather as a challenge, while midfielder Vladimír Darida appreciated the support from fans despite being away from their homeland.
REV Entertainment, responsible for the stadium’s management, highlighted the positive community response to the event. Madison SanFilippo, vice president of sports management and brand, noted the significance of Mansfield’s role in the World Cup excitement within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
While the stadium is operational, some final touches, including suite and kitchen outfitting, are still underway. The main parking lot is expected to be completed in time for the North Texas Soccer Club’s first game on July 4.
For the Kalat family, the practice was a memorable experience. Although ticket prices for actual World Cup matches are prohibitive, the opportunity to see their team up close was a thrilling alternative.
