New Children’s Book Celebrates Neurodiversity and Unconditional Belonging

Marigold R. Linaker has released her debut children’s book, ‘Cobie the Cactus: Happy As He Is,’ under her imprint Many Petals Press. This picture book, aimed at children aged three to seven, presents a narrative that celebrates neurodiversity and emphasizes unconditional belonging.

Understanding and Acceptance

Set in a vibrant garden, the story follows Cobie, a cactus who finds the world around him overwhelming. Unlike other plants, Cobie prefers calm and stillness, struggling to communicate in expected ways. The book highlights the importance of listening and acceptance, as Cobie’s friends learn to appreciate him as he is, rather than trying to change him.

Inspired by real children, including those with experiences similar to autism, Linaker crafted this story to fill a gap in children’s literature. The book portrays neurodivergent experiences with dignity and accuracy, avoiding stereotypes and labels.

Impact and Availability

Early readers have praised the book for its powerful message and gentle storytelling. As schools and families seek stories that foster emotional literacy and inclusion, ‘Cobie the Cactus: Happy As He Is’ offers a radical message that belonging should be unconditional.

The book is available on Amazon and selected retailers, with a companion interactive app in development. A virtual launch event will include a live reading and Q&A, followed by school and library visits across the UK to encourage discussions on empathy and understanding.
