BioNTech to close German and Singapore sites after failing to find buyers

BioNTech, the German biotech firm that co‑developed the world’s most widely used COVID‑19 vaccine, said on Monday it will close several manufacturing sites in Germany and Singapore. The decision follows a “wide‑ranging sales process” that did not result in a buyer for the facilities.

Sites slated for closure

The company had previously announced in May that it would seek purchasers for its German plants in Idar‑Oberstein, Marburg and Tübingen, as well as its Singapore operation. With no offers forthcoming, BioNTech has opted to wind down the sites.

Impact on employment

The restructuring will affect up to 1,860 employees across the affected locations. BioNTech’s spokesperson said the firm has reached an agreement with the works councils to provide “socially responsible solutions” and supplementary redundancy terms for the staff who will be laid off.

Background on the facilities

These sites were originally expanded to produce the Pfizer‑BioNTech COVID‑19 vaccine during the pandemic. As global demand for the vaccine has tapered, the company began transferring production capacity to its partner Pfizer and looking for ways to repurpose or divest the excess capacity.

Future direction for BioNTech

In March, BioNTech announced that its two co‑founders would depart by the end of the year to launch a new venture. The company continues to focus on its broader pipeline of mRNA‑based therapies and vaccines for other diseases, aiming to leverage the technology beyond the pandemic.

Financial context

While the closures represent a significant operational shift, BioNTech remains financially stable, with a diversified portfolio of research programs. The company did not disclose any immediate financial impact from the shutdowns, but it emphasized its commitment to responsible handling of the transition for affected workers.

Industry reaction

Industry analysts note that the move reflects a broader trend of biotech firms recalibrating post‑pandemic production capacity. The decision underscores the challenges of maintaining large‑scale vaccine manufacturing facilities when demand normalizes.

BioNTech’s actions illustrate the ongoing adjustment of the biotech sector as it moves from emergency pandemic response to long‑term therapeutic development.
