Convenience Foods Rise as Americans Seek Quick, Nutritious Meals

Americans are juggling work, school and family duties, and the pressure to eat well in limited time is reshaping the food market. Circana’s latest data reveal that about 50% of meals are prepared in under five minutes, making speed a standard expectation for everyday eating.

Balancing Speed and Nutrition

David Portalatin, senior vice president at Circana, notes that consumers are no longer willing to sacrifice nutrition for convenience. They want meals that fit hectic schedules while still providing the protein and fiber they associate with health benefits.

Nutrition experts echo this sentiment. Registered dietitian Jessie Furman, speaking for the University of Florida Department of Recreational Sports, warns that overly rigid “clean‑eating” rules are hard to sustain and can lead people to eliminate foods they don’t need to avoid. Instead, dietitians recommend incorporating pre‑prepared items—such as rotisserie chicken or precooked grains—into balanced meals.

What Nutrients Matter Most?

Two nutrients dominate shoppers’ checklists: protein and fiber. A 2025 International Food Information Council survey found that Americans link protein with muscle health and energy, while fiber is prized for supporting digestion and overall nutrient density.

Daphne Altema‑Johnson, a registered dietitian at Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, explains that many fiber‑rich foods also supply vitamins and minerals, encouraging consumers to look beyond calories alone.

Consumers Are Reading Labels

According to IFIC, 79% of Americans examine nutrition or ingredient information at least sometimes while shopping. Shoppers are increasingly seeking foods that deliver the nutrients they want—more protein, more fiber—while also monitoring sugar and sodium levels.

This heightened awareness is prompting manufacturers to redesign packaging and preservation methods. Stella Nordhagen of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition highlights that better packaging extends shelf life, giving households more time to use nutritious foods before they spoil.

Convenience Reduces Decision Fatigue

Nutrition researcher Alyssa Post of Banner Health points out that repeated meal decisions can cause mental strain and decision fatigue. When energy is low, people tend to choose the easiest option.

Emma Beckett, a nutrition lecturer at Australian Catholic University, advises keeping healthier choices within easy reach to reduce planning effort. A review in the journal Nutrients supports this, noting that convenient foods can lower the time and mental load required for meal preparation.

Technology Helps Guide Choices

Floor van de Horst, global marketing director of performance and active nutrition at FrieslandCampina, says artificial intelligence is making personalized nutrition guidance more accessible, helping shoppers find products that match their health goals.

Similarly, Yuka co‑founder Julie Chapon has developed an app that lets consumers scan barcodes to see a food’s rating and discover better‑rated alternatives, simplifying the label‑reading process.

Looking Ahead

As the convenience economy expands, food companies will continue to balance speed with nutritional quality. By offering pre‑prepared, nutrient‑dense options and leveraging technology to simplify label information, the industry aims to support busy families in maintaining healthier eating habits without added hassle.
