New Dolly Parton mural brightens downtown Hobbs during Music & Murals Fest

Downtown Hobbs received a colorful tribute to the late country music legend Dolly Parton this week. The mural, painted on the side of a building at 121 W. Broadway Street, was unveiled during the city’s annual Music & Murals Festival, which began on September 12.

Artist’s inspiration and community response

Los Angeles‑based artist Melanie Posner spent five days on the project, describing the experience as “one of the biggest honors of her life.” Posner said that even while the work was only partially finished, crowds of onlookers—especially young girls—gathered to watch. “I had a couple moments where I was crying with them. I couldn’t help it,” she recalled.

The building’s owner originally planned a different piece, but after Parton’s passing in late August, the decision was made to dedicate the space to the beloved singer‑songwriter. The mural now serves as a visual reminder of Parton’s impact on music and literacy across New Mexico.

Governor’s endorsement

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham reposted images of the mural on social media, declaring the day “Dolly Parton Day” in tribute to the artist’s hit song “9 to 5.” The governor also highlighted Parton’s Imagination Library, which has delivered more than two million books to children throughout the state, underscoring the lasting educational legacy she leaves behind.

Festival context

The Music & Murals Fest is a yearly celebration that brings together local musicians, visual artists, and residents to showcase the cultural vibrancy of Hobbs. This year’s event featured a lineup of regional bands and several mural projects, with Posner’s work becoming the centerpiece of downtown’s artistic showcase.

Community members expressed pride in seeing a nationally recognized figure honored in their city. Many said the mural not only adds aesthetic appeal but also reinforces Hobbs’ commitment to supporting the arts and family‑friendly events.

Looking ahead

City officials hope the mural will become a lasting landmark that draws visitors and encourages further investment in downtown revitalization. The artwork is expected to remain on the building’s façade for the foreseeable future, serving as a reminder of the power of music, literature, and community spirit.

For those interested in seeing the mural in person, it is located at 121 W. Broadway Street, directly across from the historic downtown plaza. The Music & Murals Festival continues through the weekend, offering live performances and additional art installations for residents and travelers alike.
