Mountain lion tranquilized and released after safe capture in San Francisco’s Sunset District

San Francisco residents received an alert on Friday after a young male mountain lion was spotted wandering the streets of the Sunset District. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) responded quickly, tranquilizing the animal and securing it without injury.

Safe capture and release

Wildlife officials, aided by a video submitted by KCRA viewer Pauline Tom, showed the sedated lion being carefully lifted onto a transport crate. Police temporarily closed nearby roadways on 44th Avenue while the operation took place, ensuring the safety of both the public and the animal.

The CDFW confirmed the lion is estimated to be between two and three years old and weighs about 79 pounds. After a brief health check, the animal was fitted with a GPS satellite collar and released back into suitable wild habitat, where it will be monitored by the Santa Cruz Puma Project.

Why young males venture into the city

According to CDFW officials, this is the second young male mountain lion captured in San Francisco this year. “Young dispersing males, on their own and without their mothers to guide them, often face a difficult challenge finding a territory where a dominant adult male does not already reside,” a spokesperson explained. “When those opportunities are scarce, they may wander into urban areas, prompting a humane assist back to the wild.”

Officials emphasized that neither of the captured lions posed a public safety threat. The tranquilization and capture were conducted by trained professionals following established protocols to minimize stress to the animal.

Community response and future monitoring

Local residents expressed relief that the situation was handled swiftly and safely. The GPS collar will allow wildlife biologists to track the lion’s movements, providing valuable data on how these big cats navigate the interface between urban environments and natural habitats.

The CDFW urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any wildlife sightings promptly. Early notification enables rapid, humane responses that protect both people and the animals that share our neighborhoods.
