Bengals dominate Texans 20-6 as Ja’Marr Chase scores two touchdowns

In a decisive Sunday afternoon matchup, the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Houston Texans 20-6, moving to 2-0 on the season while the Texans slipped to 0-2. The game’s headline was the connection between quarterback Joe Burrow and star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who each caught a touchdown pass.

Burrow and Chase find rhythm early

After a modest performance against Tampa Bay the previous week—just two receptions for 12 yards—Burrow, head coach Zac Taylor, and offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher emphasized the need to get Chase the ball more often. That plan materialized on Cincinnati’s opening drive when Chase hauled in a 14‑yard reception, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Midway through the first half, Chase made a spectacular 32‑yard touchdown grab, pulling the ball into the end zone over defender Derek Stingley. The play came with about three and a half minutes left in the half and gave the Bengals a 7‑0 lead.

Second touchdown extends lead

Burrow struck again early in the third quarter. Chase secured an 18‑yard pass in the end zone, diving past defender Reed Blankenship to push the score to 17‑3. The touchdown came with roughly three minutes remaining in the period, giving Cincinnati a comfortable margin.

Chase finished the night with seven receptions for 75 yards, while Burrow completed 20 of 31 passes for 207 yards despite dealing with back tightness that limited his practice time earlier in the week. Fellow receiver Tee Higgins contributed five catches for 95 yards.

Texans struggle on offense

Houston’s quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 30 of 55 attempts for 353 yards, but the Texans could not translate yardage into points. Their ground game stalled at just 18 rushing yards, and they failed to reach the end zone. The team also missed star receiver Nico Collins, who was unavailable after scoring 31 points in the previous game.

Special teams provided the only scoring for Houston. Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 45‑yard field goal to make it 17‑6 late in the third quarter, and a later 37‑yard effort trimmed the lead to 7‑3 before halftime. However, the Bengals answered with a 57‑yard field goal by Evan McPherson early in the fourth, restoring a double‑digit advantage.

Key moments and turnovers

The Texans’ first half featured several miscues that hampered their chances. A punt snap fumble early in the second quarter and a failed fourth‑and‑inches conversion from the Cincinnati 18‑yard line—stopped by Dexter Lawrence—kept Houston off the scoreboard.

Later, Stroud was flagged for intentional grounding on a drive that could have shifted momentum, forcing a punt instead of a potential scoring opportunity.

Looking ahead

The Bengals will host the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday, aiming to continue their strong start. The Texans travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts, hoping to rebound and avoid a 0‑3 start for a second consecutive year.

Both teams will look to build on the lessons from this game as the NFL season progresses.
