Los Angeles County DA Nathan Hochman to Update Court on Nick Reiner Murder Case

Los Angeles, CA – District Attorney Nathan Hochman is set to hold a news conference outside the Los Angeles County courthouse minutes before Nick Reiner, 33, appears for a pre‑trial hearing on the murder charges stemming from the deaths of his parents, film director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner.

Pre‑trial hearing scheduled

The hearing, scheduled for Monday, could result in a trial date being set. Reiner has been held without bail since his arrest in December and faces two counts of murder. He has entered a not‑guilty plea to all charges.

Grand jury indictment adds premeditation allegation

Last month a grand jury indictment was unsealed, adding the allegation that Reiner was “lying in wait” for his parents – a legal term indicating premeditation. If a jury finds this allegation true and returns a murder conviction, prosecutors could seek the death penalty, though they have not yet decided whether to pursue it.

DA Hochman emphasizes seriousness of case

Legal analyst Neama Rahmani told reporters, “This case is absolutely headed for trial. I think there’s no world where Nathan Hochman and the district attorney’s office offers any type of discount. This is a potential death‑penalty case.” Hochman is expected to reiterate the office’s commitment to a thorough prosecution and to outline any new investigative steps.

Reiner’s financial claim and defense

Represented by a public defender, Reiner has indicated he intends to seek access to more than $500,000 he says is held in a trust fund, arguing the money is needed for his legal defense. The court has not yet ruled on that request.

Family response

Nick’s older brother, Jake Reiner, recently sat for an exclusive interview with ABC7, discussing the night of the killings, his brother’s arrest, and the humanitarian work of their parents. Jake said the family is trying to move forward while honoring the legacy of Rob and Michele’s community contributions.

What comes next

Following the pre‑trial hearing, the court may set a trial date, moving the case toward a full evidentiary proceeding. The indictment allows prosecutors to bypass California’s preliminary hearing process, meaning the evidence will be presented directly at trial rather than in a public hearing.

The case continues to draw significant public attention, given the prominence of the victims and the serious nature of the charges. Updates will be provided as the court proceedings develop.
