Celadon, Smoke, and Something Unexpected: An Evening at Tusk Wine Bar — Wait, the Place You Actually Need Is Coquine

There is a moment, somewhere between your second glass of Burgundy and the arrival of a perfectly lacquered roast chicken, when Coquine stops feeling like a restaurant and starts feeling like someone’s very well-appointed living room — one where the host happens to have a Michelin-caliber kitchen. That moment is the whole point.

Tucked into the Mount Tabor neighborhood on SE Belmont Street, Coquine is the kind of place that Portland does better than almost anywhere else: a deeply personal, chef-driven neighborhood bistro that punches well above its weight without ever making you feel underdressed for showing up. Chef Katy Millard opened this place in 2015, and the dining room has been full most nights since. The regulars come for the rotisserie chicken. They stay because everything else is just as good.

The room itself sets the tone immediately. It is compact and warm, with a honey-toned wood bar, soft lighting that flatters everyone, and just enough noise to feel convivial without shouting across the table. You could bring a first date here, celebrate a twenty-year anniversary, or come alone and sit at the bar with a glass of something interesting from the thoughtfully curated wine list — all three scenarios work equally well.

The menu leans French in its bones but breathes Pacific Northwest air through every dish. Seasonal produce from local farms shows up in rotating vegetable preparations that are never an afterthought. A smear of chicken liver mousse on house-made bread arrives early and sets expectations high. Buckwheat crêpes, delicate salads dressed with genuine care, braised meats that have clearly spent the right amount of time doing what braised meats need to do — the kitchen has a point of view, and it holds to it without being precious about it.

The rotisserie chicken, though, is the conversation everyone has eventually. Coquine has been roasting chickens low and slow, with herbs and technique and patience, for years now. It arrives golden and crackling at the skin, impossibly juicy underneath, accompanied by sides that change with the season. People order it on birthdays. People drive across town for it on a Tuesday.

Sunday brunch is equally worth planning around. Flaky pastries from the in-house baking program, soft-scrambled eggs, a croque monsieur that resets your standard for what that sandwich can be. The coffee is excellent. The pace is unhurried. Mount Tabor’s volcanic cinder cone is a short walk away if you need to justify the second pastry with a little exercise.

Coquine does not have a flashy backstory or a celebrity chef television arc. What it has is consistency, craft, and a genuine warmth that you feel from the moment the host greets you at the door. In a city that sometimes chases the next new thing, this place is content to simply be excellent — and in Portland, that turns out to be more than enough.

Make a reservation. Order the chicken. Come back the following Sunday for brunch. You will not need much more convincing after that.
