Celine Dion returns to full‑length concert in Nanterre after battling rare disease

On Saturday night, Celine Dion staged a triumphant return to the stage at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, just outside Paris. The 58‑year‑old singer performed 25 songs over two hours and fifteen minutes, proving she can still command a massive audience despite her 2022 diagnosis of stiff‑person syndrome, a rare progressive neurological disorder that attacks muscles, including those of the throat.

Local fans celebrate a remarkable comeback

More than 30,000 fans filled the arena, many chanting along to the iconic riff from “Seven Nation Army” when Dion missed a cue early in the show. Audience members from across France and neighboring countries expressed deep gratitude, with several noting the personal significance of hearing her beloved hits live again.

“Je vais bien,” Dion told the crowd in French, meaning “I’m doing fine,” before launching into the encore with “All By Myself,” the song that has defined her career since 1996. The performance concluded with two Jean‑Jacques Goldman classics and a heartfelt thank‑you to the audience.

Health challenges overcome

Stiff‑person syndrome affects roughly one or two people per million and can cause severe muscle spasms triggered by noise, touch, or emotional stress. Dion has spoken publicly about feeling as if she were being strangled while singing, yet she has learned to manage the condition and continue her career.

She previously canceled a world tour in 2023 due to the illness, and this concert marks her first full‑length show since March 8, 2020. The sold‑out engagement is part of a grueling schedule of 16 shows over five weeks, with an additional ten dates slated for May 2027, totaling 26 nights before the run concludes.

Community response

Fans of all ages attended, from teachers and graphic designers to pharmacists, many sharing personal stories of how Dion’s music shaped their lives. Notably, former First Lady Michelle Obama was spotted in the audience, underscoring the event’s broad appeal.

Despite the physical demands of the performance, Dion expressed gratitude for the support and vowed to continue singing as long as she is able. “I promised myself I wouldn’t cry,” she said, adding that the audience’s energy helped her push through the emotional moments.
