Marquette women’s volleyball sweeps Illinois in home opener at Al McGuire Center

Marquette University’s women’s volleyball team celebrated a decisive 3-0 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini in the 2026 home opener on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles (3-3) out‑performed the Illini (4-3) in straight sets, showcasing depth and poise early in the season.

Key contributors lead the charge

Senior outside hitter Carson Tyler set the tone with a double‑double, recording 13 kills, 11 digs and a service ace. Junior opposite Tani Juric added eight kills while posting a team‑best .500 hitting percentage, and sophomore middle blocker Molly Welge reached a career‑high eight kills. Freshman outside hitter Keira Schmidt contributed a .571 hitting percentage with four kills and two service aces. Setter Luanna Markus distributed 30 assists and added 10 digs, while defensive specialist Emi Juric led the squad with 13 digs.

Set‑by‑set recap

The Golden Eagles seized control of the opening set from the first rally, scoring seven of the initial ten points and expanding the lead to 15‑9. Maintaining at least a three‑point cushion, Marquette closed the set with a 10‑2 run, ultimately winning 25‑16 after Carson Tyler delivered four kills in the final six points, including three straight to secure set point, and Avery Helms capped the frame with a service ace.

Illinois started the second set with a 4‑0 lead, but Marquette responded with an 8‑2 run to take its first lead at 8‑7. The Illini rallied to tie at 16‑16 and again at 20‑20, yet the Golden Eagles pulled ahead with three consecutive points, highlighted by back‑to‑back kills from Tyler and a service ace from Helms. Tyler sealed the set with the winning kill, giving Marquette a 25‑22 advantage.

The third set proved the most competitive, featuring eleven ties and a late 23‑20 deficit for Marquette. The Eagles fought off two set points before Tani Juric’s consecutive kills pushed the score to a 25‑24 lead. An Illinois attack error on the subsequent rally completed the comeback, allowing Marquette to close the set 26‑24 and complete the sweep.

Looking ahead

Marquette will conclude the home‑and‑home series with a return matchup in Champaign, Illinois, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. CT. The Golden Eagles aim to build on their strong opening performance as they continue their conference schedule.
