King Charles’ letter reaffirms Harry and Meghan are private citizens

In a formal letter sent on Monday, the Lord Chamberlain – the senior officer of the British royal household – reiterated that Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are “private citizens” following their return to the United Kingdom two weeks ago. The correspondence, issued on behalf of King Charles III, was distributed to government departments, the armed forces, Lord‑Lieutenants and the Sussexes’ own staff.

Letter clarifies royal status

The palace statement noted that it is “well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.” It added that this position “will continue to be fully respected” and that there is “no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

Operational matters to be handled by police

According to the letter, any operational issues involving Harry and Meghan should be directed to the appropriate police authorities. The Sussexes have been pressing the U.K. Home Office to restore the taxpayer‑funded security detail that was reduced when they moved to North America in 2020. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) is scheduled to meet later this week to discuss the couple’s arrangements, with a possible meeting as early as Tuesday.

Family life back in Britain

Harry and Meghan arrived back in the country late last month with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who have been enrolled in British schools. The letter emphasized that all charitable work undertaken by the couple is a “personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” describing their position as “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” It also instructed that all correspondence and administrative questions be sent directly to the Sussexes’ office, which will continue to operate separately from the Royal Household.

Context of the royal family’s recent changes

The clarification comes as the royal family’s new diary period begins and several departments have sought guidance on how to interact with the Sussexes. Since their 2020 departure to the United States, Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the wider royal family has been publicly strained. Their return marks a new chapter, but the palace’s letter makes clear that they will not resume any official royal duties.

What this means for the public

For government officials, law‑enforcement agencies and other entities that previously coordinated with the Sussexes in an official capacity, the letter serves as a reminder to treat the couple as private individuals. It also signals that any future engagements with the Duke and Duchess will be managed through their own office rather than through the Royal Household.
