A Eugene mom shares practical advice for the class of 2027 seniors

Dear seniors of the class of 2027,

Welcome to the last first day of school. Senior year arrives with a rush of deadlines and the unique feeling of standing between childhood and adulthood. As a mother who has watched three of her children graduate and now has another walking across the stage, I want to share the lessons that have helped my family thrive.

Prepare the night before

Start each day with a plan. Organize your backpack, check your schedule, and write a to‑do list. This habit will serve you well beyond high school.

Limit screen time

The internet and your phone will still be there in the morning. Turn them off and get a good night’s sleep. Consider a digital Sabbath—spend a few hours each weekend reading, playing an instrument, or enjoying the outdoors.

Use Sundays wisely

Review upcoming assignments, charge devices, do laundry, and clear out emails and texts you’ve been postponing. A productive Sunday sets a positive tone for the week.

Eat real food

Proper nutrition fuels both mind and body. Skipping meals or relying on junk food makes it harder to stay focused.

Ask for help when needed

Teachers, parents, coaches, and counselors are ready to assist. Knowing when to reach out is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.

Expand your circle

Senior year is a perfect time to meet new people and let old cliques dissolve. Be the friend who lifts others up.

Avoid burnout

High school is not the end of learning. Pace yourself and remember you have a whole life ahead.

College applications

Start them as soon as possible—ideally yesterday. While test scores and college names feel crucial now, they matter far less in the years to come.

Trust your parents

Their guidance may sometimes feel like nails on a chalkboard, but they want what’s best for you. Give them the benefit of the doubt.

Use AI wisely

AI can enhance learning, but don’t let it do the work for you. Struggling with an essay or a math problem builds character.

Do the reading

Even the long classics matter. In twenty years you’ll still recall titles like “The Great Gatsby” and “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”

Prioritize sleep

Go to bed now. Rest is essential for success.

Respect teachers

They are dedicated professionals. Show up on time, listen, and thank them for their effort.

Make decisions step by step

You don’t need to decide your entire future today—just the next right choice.

Live beyond the screen

The world outside your phone is beautiful. Experience it.

Hold onto hope

Even in unprecedented times, every era has faced challenges. Look for the good and stay hopeful.

Enjoy the victory lap

Senior year is the culmination of twelve years of effort. Savor every moment, knowing a crowd of supporters is cheering you on.

You’ve got this!
