West Palm Beach hotel standoff ends with suspect arrested after confessing to girlfriend’s murder

West Palm Beach, Fla. – Law‑enforcement officials in Palm Beach County announced the arrest of Todd Wegrich following an hours‑long standoff at a downtown hotel. The suspect had earlier confessed to murdering his girlfriend, and the case is now being investigated by the Violent Crimes Division.

Timeline of events

The incident began on Friday, September 4, when deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls reporting a possible shooting at a residence in the 1400 block of Tangled Orchard Trace in Loxahatchee. Four callers said Wegrich had called friends and family, admitting he had killed his girlfriend and fled the scene.

When deputies arrived, they found evidence of gunfire near the home. Under exigent circumstances they entered the residence and discovered a deceased female just inside the front door, showing multiple gunshot wounds.

Violent Crimes detectives quickly determined that Wegrich was in the vicinity of 215 N. Narcissus Avenue in West Palm Beach. West Palm Beach Police located his vehicle in a parking garage near The Ben Hotel, confirming that he was a registered guest at the property.

Negotiations and resolution

Police contacted Wegrich by phone and entered into prolonged negotiations, urging him to surrender peacefully. Throughout the discussion, the suspect threatened self‑harm and suggested he might force officers to use force against him. Despite these alarming statements, SWAT teams from both the West Palm Beach Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office maintained a calm, professional approach.

After several hours, the joint SWAT effort succeeded in taking Wegrich into custody without incident. He was transported to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Division, where he provided a full confession to the murder of his girlfriend.

Official response

Deputies praised the cooperation between the sheriff’s office and city police, emphasizing the importance of measured negotiation tactics in resolving potentially dangerous situations. “Our priority is always to protect the public while ensuring the safety of the suspect,” said a spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. “We are grateful for the professionalism shown by all agencies involved, which allowed us to bring this tragic case to a swift conclusion without further loss of life.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities will continue to gather evidence to support prosecution. The victim’s family has been notified, and community leaders have expressed condolences while urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Public safety reminder

Local officials remind West Palm Beach residents that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and West Palm Beach Police Department are available 24/7 for emergencies and non‑emergency concerns. Citizens are encouraged to call 911 for immediate threats and to use the non‑emergency line for tips related to ongoing investigations.
