For more than five decades the Middletown Family Fun Fest has been a cornerstone of community life in Middletown, Kentucky. This year the festival returns to Wetherby Park for its 54th celebration, bringing together neighbors, families and local businesses for a weekend of wholesome entertainment.
Tradition Meets New Attractions
Commissioner Paul Hayden, a lifelong resident and now a proud grandfather, recalled the simple joys of the festival’s early days. “They used to have a flatbed truck with some bales of hay on it, and they would have a street dance Friday night. There was a local band that would just kind of play,” he said, smiling at the memory.
While the street dance is no longer part of the program, the event has evolved to meet modern tastes. Friday night kicks off with a performance by local musician JD Shelburne, followed by a lineup of regional acts throughout the weekend. Attendees can wander among nearly 100 vendors offering everything from handmade crafts to tasty food trucks.
Family‑Focused Activities
Parents will appreciate the dedicated kid zone, which features games, face painting and a portable golf simulator where participants can test their accuracy in a closest‑to‑the‑pin challenge. Early Saturday morning, goat yoga at 10 a.m. provides a light‑hearted way to stretch and relax before the day’s festivities.
The annual parade, a favorite highlight, rolls down Old Shelbyville Road at noon on Saturday, drawing crowds of cheering spectators. The parade showcases local schools, marching bands, community groups and a colorful display of floats that reflect Middletown’s heritage.
Community Connection
Hayden emphasized that the festival’s true value lies in its ability to bring neighbors together. “There is nothing like this anywhere else; this is unique just to Middletown, and it’s just a great way to meet your neighbors,” he said.
For Hayden, sharing the experience with his grandchildren adds a personal layer of meaning. “I get to see them enjoy what I enjoyed when I was a kid, and hopefully, when they have kids, they will bring them to the Middletown Family Fun Fest,” he added.
Looking Ahead
Organizers remain optimistic that the festival will continue to thrive as a unifying event for the community. Their goal is to preserve the traditions that have defined the celebration while introducing fresh elements that keep the experience vibrant for new generations.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first‑time visitor, the Middletown Family Fun Fest offers a welcoming atmosphere where families can create lasting memories, support local entrepreneurs, and celebrate the spirit of community that defines Middletown.
