Lytle Tunnel on I‑71 to Close Overnight for Maintenance Late September

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued a detailed schedule for bi‑annual maintenance on the Lytle Tunnel, a critical segment of Interstate 71 that runs through downtown Cincinnati. Beginning Monday, Sept. 28, the northbound lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, with a repeat closure on Tuesday, Sept. 29. A second set of closures will affect southbound traffic on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 1, also from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Northbound Detours

During the two‑night northbound shutdown, drivers approaching the I‑71/75 split will encounter a full closure at the split. ODOT advises motorists to use the Fifth Street entrance ramp to access northbound I‑71 instead of the usual Second Street ramp, which will be closed. Eastbound traffic on Fort Washington Way will be barred from entering the tunnel, though U.S. 50 will remain open for eastbound travel.

Southbound Detours

When the tunnel reopens for southbound traffic on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, the closure will occur at Exit 2. Both the U.S. 42/Eden Park Drive and Eden Park/Dorchester Road entrance ramps will be shut, directing drivers to the Liberty Street ramp onto I‑471 before re‑joining I‑71 via the posted detour routes. Additionally, the Third Street exit ramp from southbound I‑71 will be closed; motorists are instructed to use Gilbert Avenue and Reading Road to reach downtown.

What Drivers Should Expect

All detour routes will be clearly signed, and ODOT will monitor traffic flow throughout the night. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, especially if inclement weather develops, as conditions could delay the maintenance schedule. The agency emphasized that the work is essential to keep the tunnel safe and functional for the thousands of commuters who rely on it daily.

Community Impact

Local businesses and residents have expressed mixed feelings about the temporary inconvenience. Many appreciate the proactive upkeep that helps prevent larger disruptions later in the year, while some worry about the added travel time during peak evening hours. ODOT has pledged to keep the public informed via its website and social media channels, and to complete the work as efficiently as possible.

Looking Ahead

Once the maintenance is finished, the Lytle Tunnel will resume normal operations, providing a smoother, safer commute for Cincinnati’s motorists. The department plans to conduct a post‑work inspection to ensure all systems are fully operational before reopening the tunnel to full traffic.
