Pregnant Sumter County woman dies after hair caught in go‑kart sprocket

Sumter County mourns a beloved young mother whose life was tragically cut short when a go‑kart accident on Aug. 23 claimed her. Baylee Johnson, 24, was 15 weeks pregnant and had just learned she was expecting a baby boy she planned to name Johnny.

Accident and medical response

According to the Sumter County coroner, Johnson was operating a go‑kart on Skinner Road in the eastern part of the county when her hair became caught in the vehicle’s sprocket. She was rushed to McLeod Regional Medical Center, where she fought for her life for eight days before passing away on Aug. 31.

Family and community remembrance

Friends and family describe Baylee as a caring, humorous soul who lived her faith openly. Her obituary notes she “dreamed about him, talked about him, prayed for him and was already planning the life she wanted to give him.” The family says she was already a devoted mother‑to‑be, calling Johnny “completely and unconditionally loved” from the moment they learned of his existence.

Those who knew her recall her natural ability to care for others and to bring laughter to any room. “Caring for others came naturally to Baylee—but so did making them laugh,” her obituary reads. “She was silly, spontaneous and completely carefree.” The community gathered for a funeral on Saturday, offering prayers and support to the grieving loved ones.

Work and local ties

Baylee worked at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter, serving other expectant mothers in the area. Her dedication to women’s health and her commitment to her faith made her a valued member of the local health community.

Community response

Local leaders and neighbors have expressed condolences, emphasizing the importance of safety in recreational activities and the need for vigilance when operating equipment that can pose hidden hazards. While the incident was an isolated tragedy, it serves as a reminder for families to prioritize safety, especially when children or unborn children are involved.

Baylee’s story underscores the deep ties that bind South Carolina families together—faith, love for one another, and a shared commitment to looking out for one another’s well‑being. As the community gathers to honor her memory, many pray for comfort and strength for her boyfriend, family, and the unborn child she never got to meet.
