Novo Nordisk reports promising obesity reduction in children using semaglutide

In a development that could help families struggling with childhood obesity, Novo Nordisk announced on Monday that its weight‑loss medication semaglutide showed significant results in a late‑stage clinical trial involving children ages six to under twelve.

Trial results

The company’s STEP Young study enrolled participants who received weekly subcutaneous injections of semaglutide alongside a reduced‑calorie diet and increased physical activity. After 68 weeks, 40.4% of the children treated with the drug were no longer classified as having obesity, assuming full adherence to the regimen.

All participants, including those receiving a placebo, were provided with lifestyle‑modification counseling throughout the trial, ensuring that the drug’s impact was measured against a consistent background of diet and exercise guidance.

Company response

“We are encouraged by the positive STEP Young results and semaglutide’s potential to help children living with obesity who need medical treatment, alongside lifestyle changes, to better manage their obesity,” said Martin Holst Lange, Novo Nordisk’s Chief Scientific Officer.

The trial also met its primary endpoint, demonstrating a superior reduction in body‑mass index (BMI) for the semaglutide group compared with the placebo group at week 68. Safety and tolerability were reported to be consistent with previous studies in adults and adolescents.

Context and implications

Obesity among children remains a pressing public‑health concern in the United States. A recent study found that prescriptions for GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs among U.S. children under twelve have risen more than 300‑fold since 2019, even though the medications are not yet approved for that age group. The STEP Young data could provide a scientific basis for future regulatory consideration, offering parents and clinicians a potential new tool to address a condition that threatens the health and future of many families.

While the trial’s findings are promising, experts caution that medication should complement, not replace, healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. The combination of pharmacologic treatment and lifestyle modification aligns with a balanced approach that respects parental responsibility and the role of families in nurturing children’s well‑being.

Looking ahead

Novo Nordisk has indicated that it will continue to monitor the long‑term outcomes of the STEP Young participants and work with regulatory agencies to assess the appropriate use of semaglutide in younger patients. If approved, the drug could become an additional option for families seeking medically‑assisted weight management for their children, reinforcing the importance of evidence‑based solutions in the fight against obesity.
