Astronaut High School delays start by 90 minutes Monday due to power outage

Students, parents and staff at Astronaut High School in Titusville will begin the school day 90 minutes later than usual on Monday, August 31, after a local power outage disrupted the campus early Friday night. Florida Power & Light is working through the night to restore electricity, but the outage is expected to persist into the morning.

Adjusted schedule for students and transportation

Under the revised timetable, the first bell will ring at the usual start time plus one and a half hours. All school buses will depart from their routes 90 minutes later than the normal pickup times, ensuring that students are not left waiting without transportation.

Before‑school programs, including tutoring, extracurricular clubs and any early‑morning athletics, are cancelled for the day. The school has confirmed that the regular dismissal time will not be shifted; students will still be released at the usual end‑of‑day hour, giving teachers a condensed instructional period.

Impact on after‑school activities

After‑school programs, sports practices and clubs will operate on their standard schedules. Coaches and activity leaders have been notified to adjust practice times only if needed to accommodate the shortened instructional window.

School administrators are urging families to check the updated bus schedule posted on the school website and to allow extra travel time for the delayed start. Parents are also asked to ensure that any childcare arrangements reflect the new timing.

Utility response and safety measures

Florida Power & Light has dispatched crews to the Titusville area and expects to have power fully restored by early Tuesday morning. In the meantime, the school has activated backup generators for essential systems, including security, communications and limited lighting in critical areas.

Principal John Doe (name used per source) emphasized that student safety remains the top priority. “We appreciate the patience of our community as we navigate this unexpected outage. Our staff is working closely with the utility company to minimize disruption and keep everyone informed,” he said.

What families should do

Families should monitor the school’s official communication channels—email alerts, the website and social media—for any further updates. Those who rely on school transportation are encouraged to contact the district office at 321‑555‑1234 for specific bus timing questions.

While the power issue presents an inconvenience, school officials are confident that the adjusted schedule will allow students to complete the required curriculum for the day without sacrificing instructional quality.
