Bend Fire and Rescue Save Unconscious Swimmer in Deschutes River Near Whitewater Park

Early Saturday morning, Bend Fire and Rescue, together with Bend Police, responded to a water‑rescue call on the Deschutes River just downstream of the popular Whitewater Park. Witnesses reported seeing a man swimming above the rapids when he suddenly disappeared beneath the surface and resurfaced face down under a bridge.

Survivors and First Responders Act Quickly

Nearby surfers who were on the river at the time spotted the swimmer, pulled him from the water, and carried him to a small island in the middle of the river. Once on the island, the man regained consciousness on his own. First responders confirmed that CPR was not required.

Firefighters and police officers secured the scene, provided medical evaluation, and arranged transport to a local hospital for further care. The swift actions of the volunteers and professional rescuers prevented a potential tragedy and highlighted the community’s commitment to safety on the river.

Road Closure as Precaution

To ensure the safety of both the rescue team and motorists, emergency personnel temporarily closed Colorado Avenue near the incident site. The closure allowed crews to work without traffic interference and to keep the public clear of the riverbank while the water level and currents were monitored.

Officials indicated that the road would be reopened as soon as the area was deemed safe, and they thanked drivers for their patience.

Community Reminder on River Safety

The incident serves as a reminder for residents and visitors to exercise caution when swimming or engaging in water sports on the Deschutes River, especially near rapids and bridges. Local authorities encourage swimmers to wear life jackets, stay within designated safe zones, and never swim alone.

Bend’s public‑safety agencies continue to train for rapid river rescues, and they remain ready to protect the community’s beloved outdoor spaces. For more information on river safety and upcoming training sessions, residents can visit the City of Bend’s official website or contact Bend Fire and Rescue directly.
