Kenosha’s Rustic Road Runs Right to the Water — and You Should Follow It

There are bike trails, and then there are bike trails that make you pull over just to stand still and breathe for a minute. The Kenosha County Bike Trail — particularly the stretch that follows the Rustic Road 32 corridor through the county’s quieter western townships and curves back toward Lake Michigan — is firmly in the second category. I’ve pedaled a lot of Midwestern paths in my time, and this one earns a place on any serious list.

The trail system in Kenosha County spans roughly 22 miles of paved, well-maintained path, connecting the lakefront in the city of Kenosha with the rolling farmland and forest preserves to the west. You can pick it up near downtown at Alford Park, right where the urban energy starts to soften and the landscape opens up into something greener and quieter. Within a few minutes of pedaling, the city falls away and you’re moving through stretches of oak canopy, past wetlands alive with red-winged blackbirds, and along corridors where the light comes through the trees in that particular Midwest-summer way that makes everything look a little golden.

What makes this trail especially satisfying is the variety. You’re not locked into one mood for the whole ride. The lakefront sections give you open sky and that cool, clean air rolling off Lake Michigan. The inland stretches feel almost rural — you half-expect to see a farmstand, and sometimes you actually do. The trail passes near Pike Creek and several county forest preserve parcels, so there’s genuine natural scenery rather than just developed parkland scenery. Wildlife sightings are common: herons, foxes, the occasional deer standing politely at the tree line.

The path is well-signed and mostly flat, which makes it accessible for families and casual riders who aren’t training for anything in particular. That said, it’s long enough and interesting enough to satisfy someone who wants a real morning or afternoon out. Bring water, bring a snack, and plan for at least two hours if you want to do a meaningful stretch without rushing. Cyclists, joggers, and inline skaters all share the path, and the etiquette out there is refreshingly relaxed — people actually wave.

If you’re visiting Kenosha for a weekend and you’re trying to figure out the most rewarding way to see both the lakefront and the county’s quieter side in a single outing, this trail is the answer. Rent a bike from one of the local shops near the harbor, point yourself west from Alford Park, and let the path take you somewhere. You’ll be back in time for dinner on the water, but the part in between will be the story you actually tell.

Kenosha doesn’t always get credit for its outdoor infrastructure, but it should. This trail is a real asset — the kind of thing that makes a city worth returning to.
