Micron and College of Western Idaho Open 60,000‑sq‑ft Training Center in Boise

Micron Technology Inc. announced Monday that a new 60,000‑square‑foot Micron Training Center has opened adjacent to its Boise campus. The center is the product of a long‑standing partnership with the College of Western Idaho (CWI) and is intended to create clear career pathways in the semiconductor industry for community‑college students.

Purpose and Funding

The training center is designed to mirror Micron’s own fab floor, housing up to 20 semiconductor process tools that give students hands‑on experience with the equipment they will later operate in a world‑class manufacturing environment. Micron described the facility as an “intensive onboarding boot camp” that accelerates new‑hire readiness through practical training in fab operations and manufacturing systems.

CWI received $3 million in combined funding from Micron and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The money covers teacher salaries, the purchase of equipment, and the conversion of classroom space to support the new programs.

Educational Programs

Starting this fall, CWI will offer advanced mechatronics engineering technology and semiconductor manufacturing technology programs at the Micron Training Center. These offerings complement existing courses at the college’s Nampa campus and give students the opportunity to learn on the same tools used in commercial semiconductor production.

“CWI and Micron have built a training environment where students learn on the same equipment they’ll operate in a world‑class fab,” said CWI President Gordon Jones in the Micron news release. “This is what a decade of partnership looks like — a shared facility, tools, and commitment to building careers that matter for Idaho.”

Impact on the Local Economy

The center is expected to strengthen Idaho’s growing high‑tech sector by supplying a skilled workforce directly to Micron and other regional manufacturers. By aligning education with industry needs, the partnership aims to retain talent in the state and support long‑term economic development.

Local leaders have praised the initiative as a model of collaboration between private industry and public education. The training center not only provides immediate apprenticeship opportunities but also signals Idaho’s commitment to becoming a hub for advanced manufacturing.

Looking Ahead

Micron plans to continue expanding its workforce‑development efforts in the region, and CWI anticipates adding additional courses that align with emerging technologies. The partnership underscores a broader trend of tech companies investing in local talent pipelines to ensure a steady supply of qualified workers.

For students and families interested in the new programs, CWI will hold informational sessions later this summer. Details on enrollment, prerequisites, and scholarship options will be posted on the college’s website.
