Tennessee mourns Dolly Parton as leaders and fans honor the music legend

Dollywood and the state of Tennessee are grieving the loss of Dolly Parton, the 80‑year‑old country music legend who died peacefully in Nashville on Tuesday. While the cause of death was not disclosed, her publicist confirmed the singer’s passing at her home state.

National and local leaders pay tribute

President Trump called Parton “one of the greatest country singers ever” and ordered the American flag to be lowered nationwide for a week, beginning at 6:00 p.m. tonight, as a sign of respect for the cultural icon.

Mark Ezell, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, described Parton as “Tennessee’s first lady,” noting her role in bringing the world to the state’s music, mountains, and hospitality.

U.S. Representative Diana Harshbarger, whose district includes the singer’s hometown, said Parton was “one of ours,” praising her for building Dollywood, the Imagination Library, and her lifelong generosity to the people of East Tennessee.

Industry and fellow artists remember her impact

Eugene Naughton, president of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, said the park will stay open Wednesday, honoring Parton’s wish that “the show must go on.” He added that her compassion inspired generations to dream boldly.

Country star Reba McEntire thanked God for Parton’s life, saying she will “have a blast in heaven singing with family and friends.” Singer Linda Ronstadt called Parton a dear friend and lamented the loss of a “most extraordinary musical experience.”

Moderna spokesperson Mike Erman highlighted Parton’s early support for COVID‑19 research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, noting her generosity helped accelerate the development of the company’s vaccine.

Community response

Actors and fans across the nation expressed sorrow, with actress Lynda Carter sharing a personal note of love for the “sister” she felt she had in Parton. The outpouring of tributes underscores how Parton’s music and philanthropy touched a wide spectrum of Americans.

Dollywood’s decision to remain open reflects the singer’s own belief that life, music, and joy should continue even in moments of grief. Visitors are encouraged to celebrate her legacy while the park honors her memory.
