Memorial Day Travel: El Paso Drivers Brace for Heavy Traffic

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, El Paso drivers are advised to anticipate heavy traffic on major highways. This marks the unofficial start of summer travel, and many Texans are expected to hit the road for holiday getaways.

Road Closures and Detours

Several ongoing construction projects will impact traffic flow. The I-10 Widening West Phase 2 project will cause nightly closures from May 28, with detours in place for eastbound traffic at Anthony, Exit 0. Drivers will need to follow a designated route through Antonio, Doniphan, Talbot, and South Desert.

The Borderland Expressway Phase 2 Project will continue from May 18 to May 22, with crews working on transporting earth embankment. Additionally, portable barriers will be installed on Dyer southbound on May 26 and 27.

Loop-375 will undergo rehabilitation from May 26 to May 28, with nightly work scheduled to replace metal beam guard fences and repair the roadway base. Continuous closures will persist until the end of June for ongoing safety improvements.

Additional Projects

The Districtwide Striping Project will retrace pavement markings from May 26 to May 29, occurring nightly. Safety improvements on BU-54A will involve potholing operations from May 26 to May 29 during daytime hours.

Road repair efforts, including guardrail and pavement repairs, will take place from May 26 to May 28. Detours will be necessary, with traffic directed to exit at Railroad Exit 24-B and re-enter Loop 375 at Rushing entrance ramp on May 26, and to use McCombs Exit 24-A on May 27.

Bridge maintenance will occur nightly from May 25 to May 28, with crews focusing on bridge joints and median work. The FM 258 Safety Improvements Project will also see activity on May 26.

Drivers are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and allow extra travel time to accommodate these disruptions. Staying informed about road conditions can help ensure a safer and smoother travel experience during this busy holiday weekend.
