Qantas A380 flew two days with a work light left in its wing

Australian Transportation Safety Board investigators reported that a Qantas Airways Airbus A380 carried a 13‑inch battery‑operated work light inside its left wing for two days. The aircraft departed Sydney for Dallas Fort Worth on January 7 after air‑conditioning maintenance, returned to Sydney on January 9, and only then was the light found.

How the tool was missed

Maintenance records show a technician scanned the light’s barcode when it was signed out for the job. While two workers replaced an air‑conditioning sensor, they placed the light inside the wing and turned it off, forgetting to retrieve it. A subsequent foreign‑object inspection failed to locate the light, and the end‑of‑shift tool‑return check also missed it.

Discovery and response

After the flight returned from Dallas, an employee reviewing an “unreturned tool report” flagged the missing light. Qantas confirmed the incident had no impact on flight safety and voluntarily reported it to the ATSB. The airline said it has strengthened tool‑control procedures, adding a mandatory pre‑clearance check to verify that all tooling is accounted for after maintenance.

Past similar incidents

The ATSB noted a prior incident in December 2023 when a tool was left inside an A380 engine after three days of maintenance in Los Angeles; that aircraft completed 34 flights over nearly a month before the tool was found. In 2020, a one‑inch screwdriver tip lost on a Jetstar Airbus A320 caused engine damage during takeoff, though no passengers were injured.

These events highlight the importance of rigorous tool‑control practices in aviation maintenance to prevent potential damage and ensure passenger safety.
