Pennsylvania State Police helicopter collides with Cessna near Carlisle, killing pilot

On Wednesday evening, around 7:50 p.m., a midair collision involving a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150 aircraft occurred in the vicinity of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident and the state’s aviation safety officials began an immediate response.

Details of the crash

According to Acting Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, the police helicopter was conducting routine training over a grassy area when the Cessna veered to the right at the last moment. The small plane struck the helicopter from the rear, hitting both the tail rotor and the main rotor, which caused a violent crash.

“The Cessna plane, for an unknown reason, veered to the right at the last moment, struck the helicopter from the rear, hit the tail rotor and the main rotor, resulting in a violent crash,” Bivens told reporters at a news briefing.

The lone occupant of the Cessna, identified as the pilot, did not survive the impact. State officials believe the pilot was the only person on board the aircraft.

Troopers injured

Both state troopers who were inside the helicopter were initially trapped by the wreckage. Emergency crews were able to free them, and they were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Governor Josh Shapiro later confirmed that the troopers are expected to make a full recovery.

“I’m pleased to say that after an aviation accident, two Pennsylvania State Troopers, while injured, are going to be okay,” the governor said during a briefing.

Response and investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the cause of the collision, with assistance from the FAA. Officials have not yet released a preliminary report, but they indicated that the investigation will focus on flight paths, training procedures, and any possible mechanical issues.

Governor Shapiro posted a message on social media urging Pennsylvanians to keep the families and first responders in their prayers. “Lori and I are praying hard and we ask all of our fellow Pennsylvanians to join us,” he wrote.

Community impact

The accident has raised concerns among local pilots and law‑enforcement personnel about air‑space safety during training operations. The Pennsylvania State Police have pledged to review their training protocols and coordinate more closely with civilian aviation authorities to prevent future incidents.

Carlisle residents, many of whom are accustomed to seeing the state police helicopter during routine patrols, expressed shock at the news. Local churches and community groups have already organized prayer vigils for the families of the deceased pilot and the injured troopers.

What’s next

While the investigation proceeds, the Pennsylvania State Police will continue to operate their aviation unit, though training flights may be temporarily adjusted pending the NTSB’s findings. The agency has assured the public that safety remains its top priority.

Authorities will release further details as they become available, and the community is encouraged to stay informed through official state channels.
