Health Confianza has unveiled a new initiative aimed at enhancing health literacy for residents of Bexar County. This county-funded program serves as a comprehensive resource for preventive health information, including vaccines, health screenings, and mental wellness.
Community-Centric Approach
Recognizing the challenges posed by information overload, Health Confianza has developed a user-friendly website, wellnesscultura.org, to deliver essential health information. The initiative also includes collaborations with local community organizations, ensuring that residents receive information in a culturally relevant and accessible manner.
Jason Rosenfeld, co-director of Health Confianza, emphasized the importance of providing a centralized source of health information. “It is overwhelming how much information is out there,” he said. “What we’ve tried to do is give a one-stop shop: here is the information that is most important around preventive health.”
Addressing Health Literacy
Health Confianza, part of UT Health San Antonio, was initially established during the COVID-19 pandemic to improve health literacy. The program has since expanded its mission to offer general health information, helping residents make informed decisions in a complex healthcare environment.
Melanie Stone, co-director of the organization, highlighted the issue of ‘info-demic’—the overwhelming amount of health information available from various sources. “People have lots of information, which can be a good thing, but it also can be something that creates a barrier to informed decision making,” she explained.
Local Partnerships and Technology
To effectively reach the community, Health Confianza is partnering with organizations like the Southside Collaborative. Edward Castillo, director of the collaborative, noted the importance of these efforts in addressing gaps in healthcare access and awareness.
The initiative also incorporates technology, with plans to introduce an AI-powered chatbot to assist users in navigating health-related queries. This tool aims to provide localized answers, further enhancing the accessibility of health information.
By partnering with Rest of The World, an Austin-based advertising agency, Health Confianza aims to make health information more engaging and relevant, particularly for Bexar County’s Hispanic population. This collaboration seeks to apply effective advertising strategies to public health messaging, encouraging healthy behaviors among residents.
