A federal judge has ruled that President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS was an attempt to manipulate the judicial process. The lawsuit, which was brought by Trump’s private attorneys, sought to create a $1.8 billion fund for allies of the president and to grant amnesty to Trump and his businesses for any past tax issues.
Judge’s Ruling
The judge, US District Judge Kathleen Williams, ordered sanctions for the attorneys involved in the lawsuit and referred one of the private attorneys to the Florida Bar for potential disciplinary proceedings. The judge also blocked another lawyer who represented Trump from entering court appearances in the Southern District of Florida for the next year.
The judge’s 56-page opinion blasted the behavior of both the Justice Department and the private attorneys who brought the lawsuit on Trump’s behalf. The judge wrote that the lawsuit was an attempt to use the court to provide legitimacy to an agreement to confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the president and to earmark billions of dollars from American taxpayers to redress grievances not defined in the law.
A spokesman for Trump’s private legal team responded to the ruling, stating that the IRS had wrongly allowed a rogue employee to leak private and confidential information about President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization to the New York Times and other news outlets.
